Old and new, familiar and innovative, building on the past and exploring the unknown – these are the successful themes that Mary discusses. The goal is to open the audience’s perception of 1) What is 3D fiber art, 2) How is it made, and 3) Where is it going. Mary uses many visual images and a full display of her own art as examples to show the audience these concepts. Audience members are encouraged to touch the art, hold it up, and move it around to get the full 3D experience.
Please bring a pair of scissors for cutting paper. They do not have to be fancy. A simple pair of blunt-edged scissors used by kindergarteners will work just fine.
About Mary McCauley
As a mixed media fiber artist, I try to push the definition of “quilt”. My vessels and other 3 dimensional works ARE technically quilts – a top and bottom layer of predominantly fabric, with a middle, filler layer, all held together by stitching. From there, I enjoy messing with the viewer, trying new shapes, surface design techniques, and embellishments, to create forms that fall somewhere between quilting, basketry, painting, and sculpture. My childhood love of pop up books made me wonder if the same paper engineering could be translated to fiber. It can! I love making pop up fiber art where the open and close motion of the work is a key part of the composition.
Mary has appeared on Quilting Arts TV, Quilting Arts Magazine, "Dimensional Cloth: Sculpture by Contemporary Textile Artists" as a contributing artist, the New Zealand Quilt Symposium, and numerous other museums and galleries across the United States. She will also be appearing on "The Quilt Show" on July 17th.
