In 2017, my husband proposed the idea of moving to San Pedro Sula, Honduras, which had been the most dangerous city in the world, to expand his business. So with 6 of our 9 children, we moved down to a 3 bedroom apartment. While we were there we made a lot of friends, and one particular 13-year old woman named Skarleth asked me if I could help her make $5.00. She lived in a slum and her father only made $30.00 a week. I had just learned how to do English Paper Piecing and was making a quilt with over 2500 hexagons, so I told her that she could help. She made 500 hexagons in one afternoon and I paid her $20.00. Soon her mother, aunts, and cousins were all making hexagons, too.
I called my sister in the States and we discussed a way to help these women create a viable way for them to make money from home. We began by making ready-made hexagon kits that came with pre-basted hexagons and a sort of "sew by number" design. My sister would start selling them online in the States while I was the "woman on the ground". That was the birth of One Common Thread, and from there our numbers keep growing and growing. We are about helping these women earn a living, improve their living conditions, and keep their children in school so we can one day break the cycle of poverty for these women.

I am a wife and a mother of 9 children. While living in San Pedro Sula, Hondurus, I was motivated to start One Common Thread. I have always been an avid quilter and have a special love and interest in making quilts, using the art of English Paper Piecing hexagons. This hobby prompted me to share this skill with women living in poverty to help other mothers provide for their children.

Our mission is to empower women in Honduras by giving them the opportunity to work and earn an income. We believe in the importance of developing self-worth by helping them to improve their living conditions. We hope this gives them the confidence and power to better both theirs, and their children's, lives.

This meeting will be both IN-PERSON and ONLINE on Zoom. Both meeting rooms will open at 6:15 and the guild meeting will begin at 6:30 Mountain time.
