20 Modern Quilts from Around the World

with David Owen Hastings

This lecture will take you around the world of modern quilts being made today! Let’s look beyond the borders of the United States, and visit some amazing quilt artists from across the globe.

20 INSPIRING QUILTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

David Owen Hastings will bring his signature conversational style and deeply researched content to introduce you to the most innovative international modern quilters — artists hailing from Argentina, Guatemala, Italy, France, New Zealand, South Korea and Switzerland. Discover how these makers are leading the international modern quilting aesthetic with pioneering techniques and unique perspectives.

As the labels between art quilt and modern quilt blur, these 20 stunning and truly modern quilts will inspire us and lead us into the next big thing. Learn how local nature, art, architecture, cultural traditions, and even politics inform and inspire these artists.

Impeccable handwork, strong quilting skills, layers of exquisite textiles, and deeply distinct cultures are woven into each of these stunning quilts.

Featured quilt makers include the following artists:

About David Owen Hastings

Hello!  My name is David Owen Hastings.  I'm a modern quilter, teacher and speaker.  I live in the lush (and often wet) Pacific Northwest, west of Seattle, Washington on the beautiful Olympic Peninsula.

I've been knitting and sewing since I was a kid.  There's something magical in taking a length of yarn or a piece of fabric, and turning it into something useful and beautiful with your own hands.  It's enchanting.  I'm one of the believers that crafts like knitting and quilting can be both an artistic expression, as well as good for the soul.

I also enjoy creating some of my own textiles through dyeing and painting.  I love incorporating these fabrics (and papers) into quilts and wall pieces with a modern twist.  I offer workshops and lectures on modern quilting and design techniques.  I enjoy encouraging participants to advance their own creativity, and try something new!

I have officially retired from a 40-year career of graphic design work!  I had the pleasure of working exclusively with nonprofit organizations, helping them connect with donors, supporters, clients and the community through distinctive branding and marketing design tools.  Now I have the gift of time to focus exclusively on my work as a modern quilter, speaker and teacher.
